June 23rd, 2008Saw Penny Ashton (AKA MC Hot Pink) in Busty Rhymes at the St. Ambroise Montreal Fringe and boy- she rocks! She’s charming, smart and sexy, not to mention she oozes confidence and totally connects wih her audience. You can tell that she’s having fun so you can’t help having a good time with her.
Keep an eye and ear out for booty-licious praise and dinosaur love, learn definitions of New Zealand expressions and enjoy lovely vocal stylings.
If you’re lucky enough, you’ll get a MC Hot Pink boobs magnet…. what could be bad?!!

June 24th, 2008Penny Ashton is fun, funny and poetic! Not to mention girlfriend rocks her pink frock! Her show is a kind of mashup of stand-up comedy and spoken word poetry, peppered with a bit song and dance for good measure. For the most part, Penny had me laughing, laughing, laughing but there were a few poignant observations. I had great time and I think this show is definitely worth $10 and an hour of your time.

June 24th, 2008Busty Rhymes with MC Hot Pink: New Zealand import Penny Ashton pens naughty poems and songs, borrowing from the hip-hop tradition, among others. She’s a funny, bawdy babe in a full-length pink ballgown with a great singing voice who knows how to shake her booty. Ms. Rhymes quickly establishes a warm rapport with her audience. Talent scouts from the Just for Laughs festival, take note.

Ian!
June 30th, 2008This was a fun show that mostly worked. It takes a brave performer to
pull people up on stage and deal with whatever comes up. Bravo!
I did find the “booby” humour lowbrow compared with the artistry of some
of the poetry pieces. Is that what it takes to get the audiences in?
Penny had expectations of her audience, and that can backfire if the
audience doesn’t deliver. She at least once didn’t get quite the amount
of reaction/applause she expected, and she told us so. If your act
doesn’t get the response you expect, pointing that out to your audience
isn’t going to help. It isn’t our fault. Keep your expectations in
check; it was us who paid to see you, not the other way around.
She fires her stories out very quickly, leaving us to think about
them and react (or not) after they’ve landed. I wondered if a slower
delivery of some lines would have been more effective, in some cases.
Put out the final words a bit more slowly so that we could walk with
you to the punchline, instead of you always racing to get there first.
Penny burst in right from the opening and whipped the audience into a
cheering frenzy, and she seemed to want to keep us up there. But that
mood didn’t suit some of her more gentle poetry. I wanted a bit more
vulnerability from her on stage.
I liked her singing voice. I wanted to hear more of it.
