Organizers celebrate continued success

Strong performances contribute to another attendance record

  1. I didn’t realize the theatre critic at the Citizen was also a food critic.
Complaints about $9 wraps - with no context?

The CHEF running the food concession at the Ottawa Fringe sources local organic produce, local range fed meat and sustainably harvested seafood.

For example: the mussels and frites on offer for the past two days were wild B.C. mussels costing wholesale $7 a pound. The meal sold for $10. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out at that price, chef not unlike a few of us here with shows with professional direction, sets, lighting designs and national touring costs -is losing money on his more complex creations. Chef explained to me he wanted to give us a chance to taste the difference between these mussels and the cheaper - and environmentally less pleasant commercially raised mussels.

The difference at the Fringe theatre venues is no matter what it costs to make, whether it’s well cooked or half-baked, raw or finished or who makes it - it costs more or less the same price to go. Shows in previews and on book cost the same and were reviewed in the Citizen just the same way as shows that were finished. Shows with no set, no lights and no costumes, no dramaturgy and no direction are reviewed, publicized and sold on a par with full productions.

The chef is not an amateur and the food is not Mickey’s D’s and therefore the meals are priced accordingly. At $9 the organic local lamb wrap, freshly grilled and full of veggies was a bargain. There were less expensive menu items on offer. Rideau Mall and the market are a block away and full of cheap food if you’re so inclined.

I really hope the Fringe will continue to use his services. It is the best beer tent food on the circuit. And like chef, even if I continue to lose money at the Ottawa Fringe, I plan to come back because I love doing this Festival. Both the food and much of the theatre on offer at the festival this week are a bargain.
